June 22 – Drafted by the New York Islanders in the third-round of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft at Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Ontario.

October 5 – Nielsen scores the first goal of his Elitserien career, and assists on the MIF Redhawks’ other goal in a 5-2 loss to Timrå before 4,848 fans at Timrå Isstadion. Nielsen and Roger Öhman helped give the Redhawks a 1-0 lead when they assisted on a goal by Marcus Thuresson.
