2004

April 6 – Nielsen enjoys the best point-production game of his SEL career with four points in Malmo’s lopsided 11-2 victory over Skellefteå at Malmo Isstadion. Nielsen assisted on Radovan Somik’s first-period goal, and scored three times himself – at even-strength, on the power-play, and shorthanded.

April 25 – Nielsen collects his first World Championship point, assisting on Kim Staal’s second-period goal – in a 6-2 loss to Russia in a preliminary game of the 2004 IIHF World Championship.

May 6 – Nielsen nets his first World Championship goal in Denmark’s fourth game of the 2005 World Championship, Nielsen gets on the score sheet with a first-period goal that puts Denmark up 3-0 over Slovenia. However, Denmark drops to 0-4 in the tourney when Slovenia bounces back to take a 4-3 win at the Olympic Ice Hockey Center in Innsbruck, Austria.

May 9 – Though Denmark lost its last three games by a combined 22-3 score to Finland, Slovakia and the USA, Nielsen was named among Denmark’s top three players, as selected by the coaches of the 12 national teams that participated in the 2004 IIHF World Championship.

September 26 – Playing in his first Elitserien game with Timrå IK, Nielsen puts his new team on the scoreboard with a power-play goal at 2:50 of the opening period. He skated on a line with Magnus Nilsson and Peter Regin.

2005

February 10 – In the first of Denmark’s three qualifying games for the 2006 Torino Olympics, Nielson is scoreless on three shots in a 4-0 loss to Norway at Kloten Schluefweg in Switzerland.

February 12 – Nielsen garners Best Player of the Game recognition with a goal and three assists in Denmark’s 5-2 win over Japan in an Olympic qualifying game. One of Nielsen’s assists came on the game-winning goal scored by Jesper Damgaard at 17:40 of the second period.

February 13 – Nielsen scored a goal in a 4-2 loss to Switzerland in the final qualifying game for the 2006 Torino Olympics. The four-team round robin concludes with Switzerland qualifying for the Olympic Games in Italy.

September 26 – The Islanders assign Nielsen to their minor league affiliate, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers of the American Hockey League.

October 8 – Nielsen makes his North American debut with the Sound Tigers, and records his first AHL goal, which happened to be the game-winner in a 5-3 victory over the Binghamton Senators.

December 23 – For the first time in his career, Nielsen is named First Star of the Game after netting the Sound Tigers’ overtime winner in a 2-1 victory over the Manchester Monarchs at the Arena at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport.
