2006

March 6 – Nielsen plays in his final pro game in Sweden. He collects an assist in Timrå IK’s 4-2 loss to Brynäs IF before 5,373 fans at Gavlerinken. Nielsen assisted on Marko Jantunen’s goal at 50-seconds of the first period.

May 5 – In the opening game of the 2005 World Championship in Riga, Latvia, Nielsen scores in Denmark’s 5-3 loss to Canada at Skonto Arena.

May 13 – Nielsen ends a three-game scoring drought with a pair of third-period goals, including a power-play tally, in leading Denmark to a 5-0 victory over Italy. He was named Denmark’s Player of the Game.

May 15 – Signed a two-year contract with the NY Islanders; Also fired five shots on goal – though he was held scoreless – in Denmark’s 3-2 win over Kazakhstan.

September 26 – The Islanders assign Nielsen to their minor league affiliate, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers of the American Hockey League.

October 8 – Nielsen makes his North American debut with the Sound Tigers, and records his first AHL goal, which happened to be the game-winner in a 5-3 victory over the Binghamton Senators.

December 23 – Named First Star of the Game after netting the Sound Tigers’ overtime winner in a 2-1 victory over the Manchester Monarchs at the Arena at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport.

2007

January 6 – Made his NHL debut in the Islanders’ 4-2 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes at Raleigh Entertainment and Sports Arena. Nielsen, who became the first Danish born and raised player in the NHL, was scoreless with two shots on goal in 7:38 of ice-time.

January 15 – For the second straight game, Nielsen is named Second Star in a losing effort. This time the Danish center scores a shorthanded goal in a 3-2 loss to the Norfolk Admirals at the Arena at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport. Nielsen also ties a Sound Tigers’ record by registering a point in his 12th consecutive AHL game.

February 13 – Scored on his first NHL shootout attempted, which helped the Islanders defeat the Toronto Maple Leafs, 3-2, at Air Canada Centre. Nielsen beat Leafs goalie Andrew Raycroft on a pretty backhand move to score the Islanders’ first goal in the shootout.

February 24 – Collected his first NHL point with an assist on Jeff Tambellini’s first-period goal against the Montreal Canadiens at Nassau Coliseum. In the second period, Nielsen scored his first NHL goal – a game-winner – that gave the Islanders a 3-2 victory.

April 29 – Nielsen is credited with an assist in a 6-2 loss to Finland in the 2006 World Championship at Arena Khodynka in Moscow, Russia.

May 1 – Assists on Kirill Starkov’s first-period goal just 86-seconds in to the contest against Ukraine in a preliminary round game of the 2007 World Championship at Khodynka Arena in Moscow. It’s Denmark’s first win (4-3) in three tourney games.

May 7 – Denmark earns its second tournament victory with a 5-2 win over Italy at Khodynka Arena in Moscow. Nielsen picks up his third and final point, assisting on Peter Regin’s first-period goal. For the second time in his international playing career, Nielsen is named among Denmark’s top three players, as selected by the coaches of the 16 national teams that participated in the 2007 IIHF World Championship.

2008

October 16 – Celebrated his first two-assist game, including a game-winning helper in overtime of the Islanders’ 4-3 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning at St. Pete Times Forum.
