2009
February 16 – Neilsen helped the Islanders to a 3-2 shootout victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins at Nassau Coliseum. He collected his sixth career multi-point game with a goal and an assist. He also scored a goal in the shootout.
April 1 – For the 10th time in his short NHL career, he collects two-points – a goal and assist – in a game. This time in a losing effort, a 5-3 defeat to the Washington Capitals at the Verizon Center.
October 30 – Scored his first two goals of the 2009-10 season in a 4-3 overtime win over the Washington Capitals at Verizon Center. It’s also Neilsen’s first two-goal game of his NHL career.
November 6 – Played in his 100th career NHL game, scoring the Islanders’ lone goal in a 2-1 loss to the New Jersey Devils at Prudential Center.
2010
January 2 – Collects his first three-point NHL game with a trio of assists in the Islanders 6-5 shootout victory over the Atlanta Thrashers at Nassau Coliseum. He also scored a goal in the shootout against Atlanta goalie Johan Hedberg.
May 8 – Nielsen played a huge role – and earned Player of the Game honors – in what at the time was the biggest ice hockey victory in Danish history. Nielsen scored the first and last goals in Denmark’s 4-1 win over powerhouse Finland in the opening game of the 2010 World Championship at Lanxess Arena in Cologne, Germany. A workhorse for Denmark, he registered four shots with a plus-1 rating while skating a team-high 34 shifts.
May 10 – Denmark continues to shock the hockey world. This time with a 2-1 win over the United States at Lanxess Arena. Nielsen assisted on Lars Eller’s power-play goal that gave the Danes a 1-0 lead in the second. Nielsen was named Denmark’s Player of the Game.
May 14 – For the first time in history, Denmark qualifies for the Playoff Round, defeating Slovakia, 6-0, to advance to a quarterfinals showdown with Sweden.
May 20 – Nielsen collects an assist in a 4-2 loss to Sweden at SAP Arena in Mannheim, Germany. He assisted on Jesper Damgaard’s second-period goal that sliced Denmark’s deficit to 3-1.
May 20 – For the third time in his international playing career, Nielsen is named among Denmark’s top three players, as selected by the coaches of the 16 national teams that participated in the 2010 IIHF World Championship.
Oct. 9 – Recorded his first point/assist of the 2010-11 NHL season in a 5-4 shootout loss to the Dallas Star in the season-opener for both clubs.
Oct. 11 – Scored his first goal of the season, and added an assist, in the Islanders’ 6-4 home win over the New York Rangers.
Oct. 30 – Scored the first penalty shot goal of his career during a 5-on-3 penalty kill in a 6-1 loss at Philadelphia.
